The Thirst That Never Dies
One of the first chapters of the Bible that really caught my attention when I began my reading was the Woman of Samaria. It is in John 4 and has always stuck with me. I have been thinking of it quite a bit as one of the verses is my favorite and keeps popping up of late. The verse is John 4:13-14.
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” NIV
The more I ponder this scripture the last week, the more I have come to realize that I had an unquenchable thirst for something most of my life, a thirst that wouldn’t die, so to speak. Along the way I drank from many cups in order to quench that thirst. I drank from the cup of Pride, I drank from the martial arts cup, I drank from the Eastern Philosophy cup, and I drank from the NFL cup. No matter how many cups I drank from, I couldn’t seem to quench my thirst.
It has been said by some that my becoming a Christian is just my latest fad. But I fully believe that over all those years of my life, all those things I have done and tried, the cups I have drank from, was me searching for something much more meaningful and fulfilling in life. Once I drank the water from the cup Jesus Christ offered, the searching came to an end, and the thirst that couldn’t be quenched was drowned out by the saving grace of Jesus Christ. That is not a fad but something that is forever. It has welled up inside of me and made it possible to deal with hungers and thirsts from God’s perspective.
If you have the same thirst, then try drinking from the cup that I did. The living Word, Jesus Christ, and the written Word, the Bible, can satisfy any thirst in our souls.

In today’s world, true Christians seem to be harder to find. “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 3:18
Too many people today either deny Christ’s power or are praising others for exploiting other destructive attitudes, fads, and anti-Christ behavior(s). For those of us who find comfort in the Lord, we also await His return that can happen any day. Be blessed!!

Amen. I had the same kind of Thirst search. Religion can be a fad, but Jesus himself is no fad – and never can be. He is what he says he is – the way the truth and the Life.

David, not only is there comfort in the Lord but there is a great comfort in know that if he returns today, we are ready for it. When scripture says “every knee will bow” I can’t wait to take a knee before my lord and savior.
Be safe my brother.

Pastor Randy, I just love John 14:6. No one comes to the Father except through me. That scripture pretty much says it all.
Thanks for the comments and be blessed.

“Thirsty again”- The story of her life- a daily walk to and from the well- perhaps two daily walks. The fact that she came in the middle of the day suggests she was friendless- morning and evening seem more likely times for the local women to get necessary water. The reality of an empty waterpot necessitates the need for more. 5 Husbands- living with number 6- all empty, all failures. The she met number 7- who told her, ” all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” This half breed Woman was taken from outcast, monotony, adultery, bitterness to a worshipper of the True God- He told her,”the Father seeketh such to worship him”. This is salvation- the “seeker of sinners” is the “savior of sinners”- He desires us(sinners) to be with him- in fellowship with Him -at his feet- as God intended.

I’ve drank from the same cups you have, Mike. I also drank from the miserable cup of drug abuse. But only the cup offered by Jesus Christ took away my thirst. It’s interesting as I look back at my life, no matter how often I turned away from God, He never turned away from me.

I totally understand Craig. I’m still in awe that he waited for me. He will wait for all of us and it’s never too late to turn to him. I’m just glad we did.
Be blessed. You and Cathryn are in my prayers.
