If you are a Clint Eastwood fan like me the words “endeavor to persevere” should bring a smile to your face. They were spoken by Chief Dan George in the 1976 film The Outlaw Josey Wales. George is telling Eastwood about how the Indians got to meet the Secretary of the Interior in Washington.
“We told him about how our land had been stolen and our people were dying. When we finished, he shook our hands and said, “endeavor to persevere!” They stood us in a line: John Jumper, Chili McIntosh, Buffalo Hump, Jim Buckmark, and me — I am Lone Watie. They took our pictures. And the newspapers said, “Indians vow to endeavor to persevere.” We thought about it for a long time, “Endeavor to persevere.” And when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union.”
It is one of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies. But what does “endeavor to persevere” really mean? Well, endeavor is defined as to exert oneself to do or effect something; make an effort; strive. And persevere “to persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement.”
I am heading into my 21st year now of running my Vikings website in one form or another on the Internet. The last 10 years of it has been since I gave my life to Christ and started the Faith Blog section of the site which, in reality, is the only reason, I keep doing this on a regular basis. I just turned 66 in January and the last few years I have wanted to dissolve myself of not only the website but pretty much an online presence entirely and just simplify my life. But on more than one occasion over the last few months God has impressed on me the importance to keep doing this. He has given me a talent to create a website and the ability to put my thoughts about Him and His Gospel down for the whole world to see on the Internet. Therefore, I have decided to “endeavor to persevere” and continue running the site at least for another year and a half. We are commanded to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” The Internet is a great way to spread the Gospel to all nations.
I don’t know how many people use this site or read these blog posts, but if it brings encouragement to someone’s faith or leads just one person to seek out Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior then it will be worth all the time and energy. I know Jesus because someone told me about Him, and I will continue to tell others about Him through this site. We are all born in need of a Savior and without Jesus we are lost and will spend eternity in darkness.
Do you know Jesus Christ? If not, would you like to? If you want to talk about how you can have a relationship with Him and worship him, just click the Contact Me link at the top of the site page and I’d be happy to talk with you.
