Not of This World

It was a long wet winter here in the Midwest. Plenty of snow cover and rain made for some saturated ground as we headed into Spring. Then we were hit with unusually heavy rainfall, especially the last two weeks. Consequently, I stepped out of bed in the basement one morning only to put my foot down on wet carpet. After a few hours we had things cleaned up and some fans running and have just had to keep an eye on things since. At least our sump pump was running, or so I thought. The motor was running but the pump was rusted, corroded and locked up. That took another two days to replace. This only happens during extremely wet seasons every decade or so, but despite my best efforts, it seems the water always finds a way in and messes things up.

The last couple of weeks I have noticed my mood turning sour on me. Plenty of complaining and grumbling. I would get upset about things that were a week or two away and that I had no control over. Then last Sunday during my prayer time God impressed upon me that my life and walk with Him was much like my basement and the water getting in.

You see, we are In this world but we are called not to be Of this world. Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 1 John 2:15. When you start focusing on the things of this world then they start seeping in. Politics, social media, financial worries, world situations, you name it. Any of a dozen things that we can let take control of our lives and thoughts and then they become the focus and start messing things up. And like the water in my basement, despite our best efforts to keep the world at bay it gets in at times.

But there is a solution. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2. And how do we renew our mind? The reading of God’s word and prayer. By remaining in His word and with prayer, He is the focus of our life, our guiding light and the rock on which we stand. We can still pay attention to all those things in the world that are going on around us, but He remains the focus and the pilot of our ship. We end up with a peace that only Jesus Christ can give us to make it through each day.

Do you know Jesus Christ? If not, would you like to? If you want to talk about how you can have a relationship with Him and have a peace like no other, just click the Contact Me link at the top of the site page and I’d be happy to talk with you.
