The Art of Losing Myself

Losing Myself

I had planned another article for today but I had such a great worship session yesterday morning I decided to go a different direction with this.

There are many types and definitions of worship but for the purpose of this article I am talking about the musical worship we do on Sunday mornings at service. As I mentioned I had a great worship time yesterday morning, but that isn’t always the case. I hate to say it but there are Sunday’s that I don’t put everything aside and completely submit myself to worship. I might be singing the words but my mind is thinking about the upcoming work week, the football game that afternoon, or what we are having for supper that evening. Or there may be someone in the area that is talking or a baby crying and I start focusing on that. And lastly, I may not care for the worship set that day.

This is not what worship is about and I’m ashamed to say I let these things get to me. Thankfully it doesn’t happen that often, but it does happen and it’s because I make worship about me. Worship is not about us, it’s about God.

One of my favorite songs is “Inside Out” by Phillips, Craig and Dean. One of the verses in the song says “Your will above all else, my purpose remains. The art of losing myself in bringing You praise.” That is what worship is about. Losing yourself in bringing Him praise. We should lose ourselves in our worship to God. When this happens, you don’t think of those other things in your life or what is going on around you. You are totally immersed in worshiping God and nothing else matters.

This can’t be summed up any better than Matt Redman did in his song “The Heart of Worship” which he wrote about this very problem.

I’m coming back to the heart of worship
And it’s all about you,
It’s all about you, Jesus
I’m sorry, Lord, for the thing I’ve made it
When it’s all about you,
It’s all about you, Jesus.

Worship is all about our Lord Jesus, but when we strip everything else away and we lose ourselves in that worship, it’s a much closer and personal experience with our Lord and he deserves our all. If you don’t know Jesus and want to talk about how you can have a relationship with Him and worship him, just click the Contact Me link at the top of the site page and I’d be happy to talk with you.
