If you were old enough back in 1986 then you recognize the saying in this title. It’s from a movie called Highlander starring Christopher Lambert. It’s a favorite of mine that I never get tired of watching.
I was looking for something decent to watch the other night so I rented it. If you don’t know the story it is about a group of immortals that have been alive for centuries.
“From the dawn of time we came; moving silently down through the centuries, living many secret lives, struggling to reach the time of the Gathering; when the few who remain will battle to the last. No one has ever known we were among you… until now.”
They battle one another and the only way to kill your opponent is to decapitate him, so they all fight with swords. They are all waiting for a time called The Gathering, when the remaining warriors will gather in a designated place and fight until there is only one left who will win The Prize. The prize being unspeakable knowledge and power that can be used for either good or evil. Only the last on gets the prize, hence the saying “there can only be one.”
One of my favorite parts of the show is where Connor MacLeod decides to tell his girlfriend, who suspects there is something different about him, who he really is. Just before shoving a knife in his abdomen to prove to her he can’t be killed he says:
“I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal.”
I always liked that statement about being immortal, especially the way Lambert said it in that Scottish voice. 30 years ago I thought it would be way cool to be immortal. Of course, I know now that I am immortal. In fact we are all immortal. You see, God designed us as immortal beings to live forever. As eternal beings we only need decide where we will spend all of eternity. We can spend it in the presence of God in His Kingdom or we can spend it forever separated from Him, condemned to eternal damnation. That may sound harsh but it is the truth.
The good news is that God made a way for us to enter into His Kingdom forever and that is through His son Jesus Christ. God so loved us that he sacrificed his only son so that whoever believes in him and confesses His name can have eternal life in the presence of God. That’s the Good News…….The Gospel.
